Three-Term Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz Endorses Maya Kornberg for New York City Council

Former Borough President and State Senator endorses Kornberg in highly-watched race for Brooklyn’s 39th City Council District

BROOKLYN, NY — Today, former Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz endorsed Maya Kornberg’s campaign to represent District 39 in the New York City Council:

“I'm very excited to endorse Maya Kornberg for City Council in Brooklyn’s 39th Council District,” said former Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. “Maya has dedicated her career to making government more responsive to the people it serves. She will represent every single one of us. From increasing affordability to delivering fast and reliable constituent services, Maya will make great strides towards enhancing our quality of life here in Brooklyn! Join me in supporting Maya’s candidacy for City Council!”

Marty Markowitz served as Borough President of Brooklyn for three terms from 2001 to 2013. As Borough President, Markowitz played a pivotal role in revitalizing many parts of Brooklyn, launched the Brooklyn Book Festival, advocated for inclusionary zoning and affordable housing, and was recognized as a tireless champion for the economic, social, and cultural growth of the borough. He previously served in the New York State Senate from 1979 to 2001. Prior to serving in elected office, Markowitz founded the Flatbush Tenants Council, which later grew into Brooklyn Housing & Family Services, the state’s largest tenants advocacy organization. Markowitz is a current resident of Council District 39.

The former Borough President’s endorsement demonstrates the hunger for change in District 39 and the continued momentum behind Maya Kornberg’s campaign. Kornberg has also received the endorsements of former Assemblymembers Jim Brennan (AD-44) and Joan Millman (AD-52), Democratic District Leader Doug Schneider (AD-44), Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats (CBID), Independent Neighborhood Democrats (IND), and the NYC Organization of Public Sector Retirees, among others.
